On 21 June 2025, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked down on the Richat Structure in the Mauritanian Sahara — a 40-kilometre ring of concentric rock bands nicknamed the "Eye of the Sahara," once mistaken for a meteorite impact crater before geologists traced it to a slowly eroded dome of layered sedimentary rock. Astronauts have used it as a landmark for decades; from directly above it reads as a perfect painted bullseye on bare desert.
