On 13 July 2026, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked down on Trou au Natron, a vast volcanic caldera in the Tibesti Mountains of northern Chad. A crust of bright white natron salt covers its floor, ringed by a dark cone and a jagged rim wall carved from the surrounding highland desert — one of the most striking volcanic features on the continent.
