On 18 June 2025, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked down on Laguna Colorada, a lagoon on the high Andean altiplano of southern Bolivia, and found it in its pale phase: borax-white crust cracked and streaked with sulphur-yellow mineral bloom, set inside a rust-brown desert basin. Laguna Colorada is best known for the reddish algae that sometimes tint its waters crimson — but on this particular day, the lake wore white and gold instead.
