On 4 January 2026, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked down on Cape Hatteras and found the Outer Banks at their thinnest — a ribbon of barrier sand holding back the Atlantic, with a branching tidal channel fanning out from the point like roots into the pale green shallows of Pamlico Sound.
