On 1 April 2026, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked down on the Badain Jaran Desert in Inner Mongolia, China — home to some of the tallest stationary dunes on Earth. Between the dune ridges, a scatter of spring-fed lakes sits in improbable turquoise and rust, each one held in place by groundwater welling up through the sand.
