On 21 January 2021, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked south to Antarctica's Victoria Land coast and caught the McMurdo Dry Valleys, the largest ice-free ground on the entire continent. Katabatic winds scour these valleys bare of snow, exposing bare rock in branching, dendritic fingers that cut through the surrounding ice sheet all the way to the Ross Sea, where cloud and pack ice crowd the coastline.
First Antarctica piece in the catalogue — the polar opposite, literally, of the farmland and desert compositions that make up most of the collection: no colour but stone, snow, and sea.
