On 4 August 2026, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked down on the Oquirrh Mountains southwest of Salt Lake City and found Bingham Canyon Mine — the largest human-made excavation on Earth, its terraced copper pit spiraling more than four kilometres wide in bands of grey, gold and rust against green forested slopes, with suburban Utah spreading out just beyond its rim.
